The mystery of the Shroud only seems to deepen the more its extraordinary claims are examined...
and its secrets revealed.
Members of the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP, 1978) concluded:
“No pigments, paints, dyes or stains have been found on the fibrils. X-ray, fluorescence and micro chemistry on the fibrils preclude the possibility of paint being used... Computer image enhancement and analysis... show that the image has unique, three-dimensional information encoded in it.”
"The Shroud is a stop sign for science. We can tell you what it isn't—it isn't a painting, a scorch, or a photograph—but we cannot definitively tell you what it is." — General consensus of the STURP researchers.
The Shroud is not classified as a 'relic' by the formal standards of the Roman Catholic Church, nor has it been officially declared authentic by decree. In many ways, this can strengthen its case in a 'real world' sense, but are we dealing with something that is born out of the quantifiable measures of this world. While it is deeply venerated by the faithful, its status is defined not by religious mandate, but by the weight of forensic evidence.
It is arguably the most examined artifact in mankinds history and still to this day, new evidence continues to emerge through rigorous forensic testing across a vast array of scientific disciplines.
Outlined below you will find some of the the major scientific methods used to test the Shroud. It is profound to note that not a single discipline from this extensive list has been able to explain just how the image on the cloth came to be. Even to the most hardened skeptic, the mounted evidence and the sheer level of detail captured on this 2,000-year-old piece of linen remain an enigma wrapped in a mystery (no pun intended). Its defiance of explanation is simply breathtaking.
There might be very little mystery left in this world, scientists have attempted to clear away doubt about the origin of the universe and the details about how we came to be (via cosmological and biological evolution), having grappled with these to the point of what is now considered to be a general 'consensus fact' in only the last few centuries, but the advances of our understanding can, on occasion, come up to a stop point or simple realisation, that we may not be able to come to all the firm conclusions we want, at a pace we have so often come to expect.
Science is simply a tool to help us develop an understanding, but what do we do when the tools simply don't cut-it?
What you see is not a painting, a sketch, or a clever medieval forgery. It is a 'photographic' negative encoded on ancient linen—an image that should not exist, yet stubbornly remains. For decades, experts in physics, hematology, and forensic pathology have stared into this face, only to find a mystery that deepens with every discovery. There are no pigments here; only the 'oxidized' signatures of an event that defies natural explanation. To look upon the Shroud is to confront a silent witness: a forensic record of extreme trauma and a 3D topographic map of a human form. It is the only artifact on Earth where the more we look, the less we can explain—leaving us not with an answer, but with an invitation to examine the evidence for ourselves."

Needless to say, there is a vast amount of information out there about the shroud, the reason being why it is regarded as one of the most examined pieces from mankinds antiquity.
